Debate is a club at Leo Hayes that focuses on allowing students the chance to learn and practice the art of debating. It welcomes students of all grades and debate experience and its members have become a close-knit team. “My favourite part of debate is the sense of community,” says Lauren Sturgeon, a grade twelve student who has been on the team for two years.
Along with practice in debating, this club acts as an introduction to many students at Leo Hayes. Sturgeon views this as an important part of the club itself. “I have had the opportunity to coach some of the newer kids along,” She also mentioned how debating can help people develop many different skills that are important in the future, including public speaking and presenting an argument with evidence.
Debate club is also a wonderful opportunity for students to participate in events and improve their skills as debaters. For example, Sturgeon was able to participate in the Canadian Student Debating Federation National Seminar which took place this September. She described the opportunity as “a wonderful experience…[where] I met lots of great people over zoom!”
Leo Hayes is home to many clubs, but the debate team is something special. It allows everyone to develop much-needed skills and gives them chances to grow through many opportunities. “Debate isn’t about arguing or just saying whatever whenever. It is about presenting facts in a cohesive way and keeping your cool” says Sturgeon, “[it] is a lot of fun and a great way to build confidence.”
If you’re interested in joining the debate team, they meet in Ms. Noble’s room, A233, on Tuesdays at lunch and Thursdays after school.
